Description
This print is one of at least five known treatments by Kiyochika of Umewaka Shrine in Mukojima, each exploring a distinct compositional angle or atmospheric condition of the small literary shrine on the east bank of the Sumida River. The legend attached to the site — the death and burial of the child Umewaka Maru, commemorated in Noh theater — gave the location a melancholic literary resonance well-matched to Kiyochika's atmospheric sensibility. His repeated return to the site suggests deliberate formal investigation: adjusting the vantage point, the season, the relationship between built and natural elements, and the light quality. Carefully graduated washi ground and controlled ink density across the key block would characterize his approach to the enveloping shade of the shrine grove.
