Fuji and sail boat

Mount Fuji rises in the background of this oban woodblock print while a sailboat crosses the foreground waters, a pairing that places Shoda squarely within one of Japanese art's most enduring compositional traditions. Yet Shoda's Fuji is not the bold, dominating presence found in Hokusai or Hiroshige; it appears almost tenderly, its snow-capped peak softened by atmospheric haze that blurs the boundary between mountain and sky. The sailboat provides a sense of scale and movement against Fuji's permanent stillness. The water between boat and mountain is rendered with horizontal gradations that suggest distance and depth.
