Description
A series title rather than a single print, the Eight Snow Scenes of Kyoto (likely 京都雪の八景 or similar) follows the established meisho hakkei convention of grouping eight canonical scenic views, here unified by a winter snow theme. Snow scenes allowed Kotozuka to exploit the white [washi](/glossary/washi) ground as an active compositional element: unpainted areas read as snow-covered roofs, frozen pond surfaces, and fallen drifts without requiring a separate white pigment. The eight prints would have depicted celebrated Kyoto landmarks — Kinkaku-ji, Fushimi Inari's torii gates, Gion's machiya rooflines, or the gardens of the imperial villas — each transformed by winter snowfall. Graduated blue-grey [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) skies against snow-white ground and the warm ochre or rust of wooden architecture create the characteristic palette of this type.
