Description
A five-storied pagoda in winter — whether the pagoda of Toji, Kofukuji, or another of the Kansai region's landmark towers — presents Kotozuka with a combination of architectural precision and winter atmosphere that suited his woodblock technique particularly well. The pagoda's layered roofs, each slightly smaller than the one below, accumulate snow in distinct horizontal bands, while the surrounding trees are reduced to their essential skeletal forms. The composition contrasts the pagoda's formal human geometry against the winter landscape's austere simplicity.
