$200–$2,000. Temple scenes are among the most popular subjects for this artist. Good temple/seasonal scenes: $500–$1,200. Key value factors: Kotozuka's Kyoto prints are popular and affordable. Seasonal temple scenes and garden views are most sought after.
Dated 1950, Kasuga Shrine in Nara — with its thousands of stone lanterns lining the approaches through the primeval forest of Kasugayama — is one of the great sacred precincts of Japan. Kotozuka's print of the shrine captures the atmospheric quality of the ancient site: the forested pathways, the lanterns (which are lit twice a year in ceremonies of extraordinary beauty), and the deer that move freely through the shrine grounds as sacred messengers of the deity.
