Kitano Tenmangu shrine in early spring, when the plum blossoms that are the shrine's defining feature begin to open, is one of Kyoto's most seasonally specific and emotionally resonant scenes. The shrine was built in honor of the scholar Sugawara no Michizane, who loved plum trees, and its orchards of several hundred plum trees bloom in early February — the first fragrant color of the year in the garden, traditional harbinger of spring. Kotozuka's print captures this moment of seasonal beginning.
