Description
The Niwa Temple (Ninnaji) gate — the great Sanmon (三門) of Ninnaji Temple in western Kyoto, built in the early Edo period — is one of the most impressive temple gates in the city. The two-story structure with its hip-and-gable roofs and the collection of guardian figures in its upper story commands the approach to one of Kyoto's most dignified temple precincts, the one associated with the imperial family's abdicated emperors. Kotozuka's print of this architectural subject emphasizes the gate's formal grandeur.
