The village of Ohara lies in a narrow mountain valley approximately ten kilometers north of central Kyoto. The approach to Sanzen-in follows a stone-paved lane flanked by moss-covered walls, cedar hedges, and seasonal plantings. Kotozuka's composition likely places the viewer on this path looking toward the temple's inner precinct, the lane receding beneath a tree canopy. The Japanese subtitle (大原三千院道) suggests this belongs to a deliberate Kyoto-environs series. The muted greens and soft stone grays of Ohara's rural atmosphere would have suited Kotozuka's restrained palette, which consistently favored atmospheric subtlety over decorative color. [Bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradients along the canopy and sky passages were likely used to convey the filtered light characteristic of this sheltered valley. The composition reflects the [shin-hanga](/glossary/shin-hanga) idiom's interest in roads and approaches as pictorial devices, using the receding path to draw the viewer into the landscape rather than presenting a static frontal view of the temple buildings themselves.
