This print shares its subject with the companion variant, depicting Rinnoji temple's Sambutsudo Hall during the cherry blossom season. Where two versions of the same subject exist in Kotozuka's output, differences typically involve viewpoint, the presence or absence of human figures, the density of blossoms, or the time of day implied by sky gradations. This version may represent the primary composition from which the variant was derived, or an earlier state distinguished by block wear or color adjustments made during extended print runs. The Sambutsudo's vermillion lacquerwork paired with the white-pink of cherry blossoms—somei yoshino or yamazakura—was a recurring motif in [shin-hanga](/glossary/shin-hanga) landscape prints, as architectural permanence and floral ephemerality carried both visual and poetic resonance. Kotozuka's Kyoto-trained sensibility, shaped by close attention to historic temple gardens and seasonal transitions, would have brought particular care to the rendering of spring atmosphere around this celebrated Nikkō structure.
