Description
Izu Nantan — the southern Izu Peninsula, a rugged volcanic landscape projecting south into the Pacific from Shizuoka Prefecture — is Senpan's subject in this undated print. The Izu Peninsula's dramatic coastal scenery, its isolated fishing villages, and its long tradition of exile and retreat — the peninsula was where political and cultural outcasts were sent throughout Japan's history — give the landscape a distinctive character that Senpan captures with the directness of a printmaker more interested in the specific feeling of a place than in its picturesque qualities.
