Horse in Snow shows a single horse standing in a snowy landscape, a quiet rural subject characteristic of Maekawa Senpan's interest in the unremarkable scenes of working-country Japan. The composition likely relies on the contrast between the dark mass of the horse and the unprinted or pale-toned [washi](/glossary/washi) standing in for snow — a reductive approach Senpan favored, in which the paper itself does much of the pictorial work. Snow scenes in [sosaku-hanga](/glossary/sosaku-hanga) gave the artist-printer the chance to exploit the natural color of the paper and to use [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradations sparingly to suggest overcast sky or settling drift. Unlike the dramatic snow [meisho-e](/glossary/meisho-e) of Hasui or Hiroshige, Senpan's treatment is intimate and unposed, the horse a working animal rather than a picturesque accessory. The visible carved line and the slightly uneven inking typical of self-printed editions register the artist's hand directly. The print fits within his broader sympathy for rural labor and the animals tied to it, rendered without sentimentality.
