Description
Urasa Bishamon-do Hadaka Oshiai Matsuri, the winter naked-jostling festival held at the Bishamon-do in Urasa, Minamiuonuma in old Echigo Province (Niigata Prefecture), is one of the snow-country rites of the Hokuriku region, with participants in loincloths competing within the temple precinct in deep midwinter. Maekawa Senpan's print of this Echigo festival joins his small body of snow scenes and observed regional events. Composition in such works typically uses the pale washi ground itself to register snow, with figures rendered as massed silhouettes and sumi key lines providing the darker structure of buildings, lanterns, and torches. The contrast between bare flesh and the deep snow of Echigo provides a strong tonal contrast suited to the woodblock medium. The subject reflects Senpan's preference for documenting living folk culture rather than historical or literary scenes, in line with the broader sosaku-hanga turn toward contemporary Japanese life.
