Chapter 42 of The Tale of Genji — Niou Miya (匂宮, "His Perfumed Highness") — introduces one of the two heroes of the novel's Uji chapters, Prince Niou, whose physical beauty and passionate nature echo Genji himself but without Genji's depth of feeling. Maeda Masao's illustration for this chapter, which opens the novel's final section, establishes the visual character of the new generation of protagonists, the decorative pattern language of his series now applied to a world in which Genji's animating presence has been lost.
