Print 36 — Kashiwagi (柏木, "The Oak Tree") — is another treatment of the pivotal Chapter 36 in the Tale of Genji, either a companion print to or an alternate version of Maeda's Kashiwagi illustration. The chapter's themes of guilt, illness, and the recognition of karmic consequences made it one of the most morally complex in the novel, and Maeda's engagement with it in multiple works suggests its particular resonance with his artistic concerns. The oak tree motif provides the compositional anchor around which his visual interpretation of this dark chapter was organized.
