Description

Print 5 — Akashi (明石) — is an alternate print treatment of Chapter 13 of The Tale of Genji, complementing or varying the compositional approach of Maeda's other Akashi illustrations. The Akashi chapter's combination of coastal exile, moonlit night, and romantic encounter gave Maeda compositional material that he apparently found compelling enough to develop in multiple versions, each exploring different aspects of the chapter's rich visual and emotional landscape. This print focuses on the Akashi setting within the broader framework of his Genji series.
