The Tsutenbashi bridge at Tofukuji Temple spans a ravine that fills with vivid autumn color each November, and Suizan captures this annual transformation in saturated reds, oranges, and yellows. Tofukuji's maple ravine is considered one of Kyoto's supreme autumn viewing spots, drawing enormous crowds during peak foliage season. Suizan's composition frames the covered wooden bridge as a dark horizontal band cutting through the blazing canopy, its architectural solidity anchoring the swirl of autumn color. The temple, founded in 1236, planted its maple groves centuries ago specifically for autumn viewing, making the landscape itself a work of deliberate design that Suizan records in the woodblock medium. The print's saturated palette pushes the capabilities of wood-based pigment printing, requiring the printer to build up color density through multiple passes to achieve the intensity of peak momiji foliage.
