Kyoto Woodcuts

This woodblock print belongs to Matsubara's "Kyoto Woodcuts" project, a sustained engagement with the former imperial capital that produced some of her most celebrated work. Kyoto's temples, gardens, traditional wooden architecture, and seasonal landscapes provided a native Japanese subject worthy of Matsubara's mokuhanga method, creating a natural alignment between medium and content that her American subjects deliberately disrupted. The "Kyoto Woodcuts" were published as a collected portfolio, with individual prints depicting specific locations and atmospheric moments across the ancient city. The project allowed Matsubara to demonstrate that mokuhanga remained a vital medium for interpreting Japanese subjects, not merely a craft tradition preserved in museum collections but an active artistic tool for contemporary vision.
