Snow on the Bank of Kamogawa — 加茂堤の雪

The Kamo River, running north to south through central Kyoto, transforms under winter snowfall into a study in muted grays, white, and the dark lines of bare trees along its embankments. This woodblock print depicts the river's banks after a snowfall, with the Japanese title Kamo Tsutsumi no Yuki confirming the location. Yoshimitsu renders the accumulated snow as smooth planes of white paper left uninked, a technique that demands precise planning during the block-carving stage. The Kamogawa embankment is a pedestrian gathering spot in every season, but under snow it takes on a hushed, emptied quality that suits the contemplative mood of shin-hanga landscape printing. This is one of two snow scenes Yoshimitsu produced along the Kamo River, the other being part of his Kyoraku Meisho series.
