Part of Oda's Gotanro series documenting elevated suburban railways, this print depicts a train on its elevated viaduct—one of the most distinctly modern subjects in early twentieth-century Japanese printmaking. The iron lattice or concrete piers of the elevated structure would impose a bold industrial geometry on the composition, potentially contrasting with wooden buildings or open sky beneath. Oda's [sosaku-hanga](/glossary/sosaku-hanga) sensibility, with its attention to texture and tonal range, suited the depiction of iron, concrete, and steam. The series title Gotanro appears to reference the elevated railway itself. Such prints constitute an important visual record of Japan's rapid infrastructural development during the period between the two world wars.
