Description
The 1895 print of Infantryman Fujino Kunimatsu—another foot soldier commemorated in the individual portrait series—extended the war print tradition's range of subjects from officers and generals down to the common soldier whose combat experience constituted the actual substance of military campaigns. This democratization of heroic commemoration reflected both the Meiji military's effort to build national identity across class lines and the print market's appetite for diverse human subjects.
