Description
The 1895 portrait of Infantryman Fujita Ukichi continues the series of common soldier commemorations, the foot soldier's figure given the same formal dignity as the officer portraits. The infantry soldier's equipment and dress—pack, rifle, cartridge belt, uniform—provided Gekko with specific visual detail that distinguished this modern warrior from the samurai figures he depicted in his historical subjects, the Meiji soldier a new hybrid of traditional martial culture and industrialized warfare.
