Description
The Last Stand of the Kusunoki clan at Shijo Nawate—the 1348 battle where Kusunoki Masatsura fell fighting for the Southern Court against the forces of the Ashikaga shogunate—was a subject charged with Meiji-era political meaning. Masatsura, loyal to the emperor to the death, had become a symbol of imperial loyalty invoked throughout the Meiji restoration period. Gekko's rendering would have depicted the young warrior's final moments with the dramatic intensity appropriate to a scene of exemplary self-sacrifice.
