Description

This kacho-e woodblock print depicts a cut lily arranged in a section of bamboo used as a rustic vase, a composition that combines botanical precision with the wabi aesthetic of simple, natural materials. Ohno renders the lily's petals and stamens with careful attention to botanical structure, employing delicate bokashi gradations to suggest the translucent quality of the flower. The rough texture of the bamboo vessel contrasts with the smooth curves of the bloom. Though Ohno is best known for his ichthyological series, he also produced flower studies that demonstrate the same disciplined observation applied to his fish prints. This second version suggests Ohno revisited the composition, likely refining the color register or modifying the background treatment.
