Description
Stone Bridge (Ishibashi), printed in 1960 in an edition of forty-eight, is the formally numbered companion to Hashimoto's stone bridge subject — a more widely distributed version of the same or similar composition. The larger edition of forty-eight indicates this was one of his more publicly circulated architectural prints. The ishibashi as a subject combined structural engineering with aesthetic refinement, the stone arch form having appeared in Japanese gardens and public spaces for centuries as both a functional crossing and an element of composed landscape.
