$300–$2,500. Common landscapes: $300–$800. Key value factors: Okumura's atmospheric landscape prints are modestly priced. Mountain and lake scenes are most sought after.
Lake Towada, a large caldera lake in northern Honshu straddling the border of Aomori and Akita Prefectures, is surrounded by dense forests that produce spectacular autumn color. The Japanese subtitle, Towada Ko Shushoku, identifies the subject as the lake's autumn scenery. Koichi depicts the volcanic lake ringed by hills ablaze in red and gold, with the deep blue-green water providing a cool counterpoint to the warm foliage. Lake Towada sits within a national park and remains one of the premier autumn destinations in the Tohoku region. This print extends Koichi's geographic range beyond his usual Kyoto-area subjects, documenting the wilder, less manicured landscapes of northern Japan where the autumn transformation occurs earlier and more intensely than in the temperate Kansai region.
