Description
This third treatment of Takao's autumn scenery in Koichi's catalog takes its title from a slightly more formal phrasing that emphasizes the act of viewing. The title frames the subject as a prospect or panorama, suggesting a wider compositional scope than the more intimate gorge-level views of the companion prints. Koichi may position the viewer on an elevated path or temple terrace looking down across the valley, where the autumn maples form a continuous canopy of warm color below. The multiplicity of Takao prints in his body of work mirrors the approach of earlier artists like Hasui, who returned to favored locations across different seasons, times of day, and weather conditions, treating each visit as a fresh encounter with a landscape in constant flux.
