Ernst Hacker was apparently a Western subject or acquaintance of Onchi's — his inclusion in what appears to be Onchi's portrait series suggests the international connections that distinguished Onchi's cultural world. Onchi was deeply engaged with Western modernism and maintained connections with Western artists and scholars interested in Japanese contemporary printmaking. A portrait of a Western subject by Onchi would reflect the same penetrating formal observation he applied to Japanese faces, translated into a different physiognomy.
Curated cross-cuts that include this print.
Ernst Hacker (d, ?) was created by Onchi Koshiro (恩地孝四郎).
Ernst Hacker (d, ?) depicts figures and portraits.
