"Dusk in Ginza," from the Fujisawa Woodblock Print Calendar of 1949, captures the commercial heart of postwar Tokyo at the moment of day's transition into evening: the famous shopping street beginning to light up, the department store facades catching the last light, the crowded sidewalks navigated by a city in the process of rebuilding. This is one of Onchi's most specifically urban and contemporary subjects — not the historical Tokyo of his "Recollections" series but the actual, functioning postwar city in its moment of reconstruction. The dusk light introduces the atmospheric drama Onchi consistently sought in even his most documentary subjects.
