"Friends of the Mountain" extends Onchi's mountain series with a subject that combines social warmth with geological grandeur. The "friends" in question may be actual human companions in the mountain landscape, or a more metaphorical relationship between human figures and the mountain forms that dwarf and shelter them. His mountain subjects consistently treated these geological forms as active presences rather than mere backgrounds — the mountain as character in its own right, capable of relationship with the human figures that engage with it.
