"Image No. 7: Black Cat (c)" is one of multiple versions Onchi made of the black cat subject — an animal whose visual qualities (the pure black form, the independent character, the way it absorbs and reflects light simultaneously) made it a natural subject for a printmaker interested in the formal properties of darkness and silhouette. The "(c)" variant suggests this was the third or subsequent version in a series of explorations of this subject, each addressing the problem of the black cat from a slightly different formal angle. Onchi's cat prints are among the most beloved works in his output.
