"Image No. 8: Photograph of the Family at Sea" of 1952, executed in Onchi's woodblock-and-paper technique, uses the concept of a family photograph as its subject — the image of an image, the print depicting what a photograph would show. This meta-representational approach reflects Onchi's theoretical sophistication: by making a print of a photograph, he interrogated the differences between mechanical and handmade image-making, between the instantaneous capture of a moment and the deliberate construction of a printed impression. The family at sea provided a compositional subject that combined human scale with the vast expanse of ocean.
