"Midnight — Ichimokushu Vol. 6" from Onchi's First Thursday Collection (Ichimokushu) is a nocturnal abstraction — the specific quality of midnight darkness rendered through the formal means available to woodblock printing. The First Thursday Collections were small-edition print series that Onchi and his associates produced for subscription, each volume exploring different subjects through the medium's specific possibilities. Midnight offered Onchi the extreme case of low illumination, where familiar forms disappear and color reduces to near-monochrome, creating conditions for formal investigation impossible in normal daylight.
