Calendar Sheet December 1941

A small-format mokuhanga produced as part of Onchi's calendar sheet series, this December 1941 design carries winter imagery rendered in the artist's reductive, lyrical idiom. Onchi treated calendar sheets as a laboratory for compact compositions, often pairing flat color fields with delicate textural carving and bokashi gradations to evoke season rather than illustrate it directly. Produced at the height of the Pacific war, the sheet exemplifies how sosaku-hanga artists sustained an intimate, private printmaking practice through an austere period when materials grew scarce. As with much of Onchi's work, the artist took complete responsibility for design, carving on cherry block, and printing on washi with the baren — the defining principle of the creative-print movement he led.
