"Sekino Junichiro" is a portrait of one of Onchi's most significant students and proteges — the printmaker Sekino Jun-ichiro (1914-1988), who became one of the leading figures of the postwar Japanese [sosaku-hanga](/glossary/sosaku-hanga) movement. The portrait represents Onchi's practice of creating visual records of the artists in his circle, combining personal affection with the formal observation that characterized all his portrait work. That Onchi depicted his own student places this work within the sosaku-hanga tradition of community and artistic lineage that Onchi helped create.
