Description
"Valley" renders one of Japan's most ubiquitous landscape features — the narrow valleys between mountain ridges that determined the routes of travel, the locations of settlements, and the character of regional cultures throughout the country. Onchi treats the valley not as topographic subject but as a formal problem: the V-shape of the valley walls, the way light reaches the valley floor, the relationship between the enclosed space below and the open sky above. His geological and geographic subjects demonstrate the same formal attentiveness he brought to human faces and abstract compositions.
