"View of Tokyo" is a sweeping urban panorama — Onchi's most expansive treatment of the city that was simultaneously the site of his life and work and the subject of his most sustained documentary series. His Tokyo views ranged from intimate close-ups of specific buildings and neighborhoods to broad panoramas that took in the city's physical scale and density. In each case, his formal interest in compositional structure and tonal relationship transformed the documentary impulse into genuine visual invention.
