Description
"Retour de la Jungle, Tondao, Célèbes" (Return from the Jungle, Tondao, Celebes) from 1948 depicts figures from the interior of Sulawesi returning from the forest — a subject that combines landscape implication with portraiture in a scene of physical exertion and homecoming. Tondao is in the mountainous interior of North Sulawesi, and the jungle return subject gives Jacoulet a moment of transition: people moving between the wild interior and the settled world of the village, carrying with them whatever they have found or hunted.
