Description
The angel's announcement to the shepherds at the birth of Christ — "Fear not, for I bring you good tidings of great joy" — is rendered in Watanabe's characteristic katazome style: the angel a radiant form of flat color against a night sky, the shepherds below in the earth-toned robes of ancient Judean herdsmen given a distinctly Japanese folk-art quality. The sheep, the fields, the star above — all are translated into the bold, unpretentious visual language that Watanabe developed to make the Christian story accessible as a lived human truth.
