Description
Christ carrying the cross toward Golgotha — the via dolorosa, the way of suffering — is one of the central images of Christian devotional art, and Watanabe's katazome version renders this moment with the same unpretentious directness he brings to all his Biblical subjects. The cross's weight, the crowd's presence, the drama of the procession are all contained in the bold, flat forms of the mingei tradition, the theological meaning carried not by academic realism but by the directness of a visual language developed for the honest expression of shared spiritual experience.
