Description
Christ and the disciples on the Sea of Galilee — possibly depicting the moment when Jesus walks on water toward the disciples' boat caught in a storm, or the calming of the storm — gives Watanabe a subject that combines the natural world (sea, wind, water) with the supernatural. His katazome palette is particularly effective for water scenes: the bold blue-greens of the stencil technique suggest the particular color of the Galilean sea, while the simplified forms of boat and figures give the scene its characteristic folk-art directness.
