Description
Dated 1960, this early depiction of Christ stands as one of Watanabe's first fully realized applications of his unique synthesis — the katazome stencil technique of Japanese folk craft applied to Christian devotional subject matter. The Christ figure in his mingei-style rendering would appear not as a European king or shepherd but with the visual authority of a figure drawn from across multiple artistic traditions, his presence carried through the power of the stencil's flat color and bold outline rather than academic modeling.
