Description

Christ, seated with a golden halo, bends to wash the foot of a kneeling disciple whose sandal rests before him, while a basin sits between them; six standing disciples flank the scene above, and a second row of six seated disciples fills the lower register below a patterned dividing band. Figures are rendered as flat, blocky forms with bold black outlines in indigo, dark red, mustard, and green against the mottled grey-white handmade paper, with facial features reduced to simple curved lines. A thin decorative border of stamped floral roundels runs beneath the upper group, and the sheet is signed and dated "Sadao Watanabe 1970" in the lower right, numbered 7/50 in the lower left.
