$500–$5,000. Common Biblical prints: $500–$1,500. Key value factors: Watanabe's warm, folk-art Biblical prints have a devoted collector base. Larger formats and earlier works command more.
Saint George and the Dragon — the legendary Christian martyr-soldier who slays the beast threatening a city and demands the conversion of its inhabitants as the price of their deliverance — is one of Christian iconography's most dramatic and symbolically layered subjects. Watanabe's katazome rendering of this hagiographic subject applies his Japanese folk-craft visual language to a Western saint's legend, the dragon and knight given the bold, powerful forms of the mingei tradition. The cultural translation gives the legend a fresh directness.
