An anomalous subject in Saito's body of work, Coral suggests a period of experimentation with natural form outside his typical architectural and figural subjects. The dendritic branching structure of coral—simultaneously biological and geological—offered a formal problem quite different from the geometric volumes of temples and figures. How Saito resolved that form in woodblock, whether through stylized reduction or something more organic, gives this undated print particular curiosity value within his output.
