Saito's Dachshund of 1955, edition 25 of 80, belongs to a small body of dog prints that parallel his cat work—the animal body subjected to the same formal reduction, the long low silhouette of the breed translated into an elegantly horizontal composition. The dachshund's exaggerated proportions (very long body, very short legs) align neatly with Saito's interest in bold geometric contrast; the breed is already halfway to caricature, already an abstraction of the idea of dog.
