The second dachshund print—distinguished by the numeral 2 to separate it from the 1955 edition—likely shows the same breed from a different angle or in a different compositional arrangement, Saito's appetite for serial variation evident throughout his work with animals as with temples. The long body of the dachshund presented him with a formal challenge different from the compact roundness of the cat: how to make an elongated horizontal subject carry the same visual density as his most compressed compositions.
