The 1961 Hokkaido B (Horse and Plow) complements the cattle print with another image of Hokkaido's distinctive agriculture—the draft horse plowing the rich volcanic soil of the island's interior farmland. The horse in motion, harnessed to the plow, creating furrows in flat earth under a wide sky, gave Saito a horizontal composition different from his typical vertical temple and figure subjects. The agricultural laboring animal treated with the same dignity as his human figures.
