The Kyoto townhouse—machiya—presented Saito with a different architectural problem than the temple gate or castle keep: a narrow, deep building type optimized for frontage on a commercial street, with a characteristic dark lattice facade and narrow entrance corridor leading to an inner garden. House in Kyoto (B) likely shows one of these traditional merchant dwellings, its street face a grid of wooden lattice that suited Saito's love of geometric pattern.
