The subject of Mother Love—a woman with a young child—appears throughout Saito's figural work as one of the fundamental human experiences he returned to alongside his architectural and animal subjects. His treatment of maternal affection is characteristically formal rather than sentimental: mother and child rendered as a single composed mass, the relationship expressed through spatial proximity and the formal echo of their two rounded forms, rather than through depicted emotion.
