Description
The Niken (two-bay) teahouse represented a specific architectural type within the tea ceremony tradition, larger than the standard four-and-a-half mat chashitsu but still dedicated to the aesthetic principles of wabi-cha. Saito's 1963 treatment likely shows the building's exterior against its roji garden—the rough stepping-stone path, the stone wash basin, the ancient pine that typically anchors the composition of great tea gardens.
